International Celebration Evening on Thursday 24th November
celebrating 5 years of ESOL café at Chesterton
We all had an excellent evening at Chesterton Community College.
It started with Sarah talking about the history and development of ESOL: from its humble beginnings with 5 parents who wanted to find out more about school life, to the addition of Just Talk for those who wanted to develop their vocabulary, and our latest class, English for Work, which has been offered for 3 years. Over the past 5 years we have had a wide range of nationalities, ages, languages and cultures, and now have over 80 learners on our register who attend one, or more of our 5 classes on Tuesday and Friday mornings and Friday afternoons. We also include trips out to local places: cafés and restaurants, museums, punting, walks and concerts and this is all part of the vision to promote confidence in speaking and communicating in order to take a more active role in school life and our community.
After Sarah's welcome, Dorette and Stefania introduced themselves in Dutch and Italian and talked about their experience at ESOL.
The newly formed choir then sang a variety of pieces including Adiemus by Karl Jenkins, Meet the World (a new composition), This Little Light of Mine and some rounds. The audience were encouraged to join in! The choir comprised parents of Chesterton students, the ESOL singing group and friends - there were over 20 in the group and we sang some pieces with piano accompaniment and some without! It sounded great and we all showed our enthusiasm and passion.
The buffet was provided by Chesterton Community College and we all enjoyed spring rolls, cakes, samosas, sandwiches, and much more. Drinks were also available throughout the evening and 3 lovely girls served everyone with hot and cold drinks with confidence and a smile!
The belly dancing followed and was presented by 3 beautifully dressed ladies - they danced to traditional and contemporary music on the stage and completed a variety of dances. There was also an impressive Chinese dance from Li and a solo from Ming and her little girl.
We offered two quizzes - one about flags from different countries and one about famous writers. Chesterton Sports Centre offered the prize for the flags quiz and ESOL library offered a lovely book about Cambridge for the other. We had two worthy winners!
We were supported by La Dante, Hannah First Aid, CAB, Chesterton Sports Centre, Pat Gilks, Making Weaves, Cambridge Community Fund, Chesterton Community College and Ridgeons.
There was a wonderful atmosphere and everyone had a good time!
