Social Innovation Programme
Working with Cambridge Hub – Social Innovation Programme
We have been delighted with the Cambridge Hub this term who carried out some research about ESOL cafe and the needs and barriers of isolated women who might be finding it difficult to take part in their local community. The student team analysed the provision of ESOL in our area, talked to women to gauge their perspective on learning and joining classes, and suggested some innovations and ideas for providing more suitable provision. We set up a free new class for 4 weeks – English for Women which attracted 17 members for whom this was their first visit to Chesterton classes. It was led by one of our experienced teachers who has worked in ESOL for many years and has run a similar class before. It was well attended and the ladies found it helpful, interesting and useful for everyday life. They would be keen to continue with the class and we will be running it from February 2018.
In November, the students came to Chesterton to give us a presentation of their work and suggest new ideas about using more social media, developing a range of resources at various levels and offering a more regular social programme for the ladies who felt isolated.
It was a very successful and worthwhile project and we hope to work with the Cambridge Hub again in the near future.
Here is the wonderful student team with their leader Sophia on the presentation evening. Thanks to Sophia and the whole team!
