ESOL Café Party - end of Summer Term 2017
We enjoyed a great party in June 2017 at Chesterton to celebrate the end of term. There were class members, families, children, parents and volunteers as well as a few visitors who have worked with us this year. The evening started with a quiz on every table: there was a great deal of debate about the answers and a lot of chatter! Hossein followed this with a poem, translated from Arabic to English, and he read it out to the whole group clearly and confidently. Then the singing group started getting up from their chairs to sing - a flash mob - and they performed some songs in English and African languages; some were unaccompanied, some were in a round and others were accompanied on the guitar. Everyone enjoyed the music! We were then entertained by two of our talented volunteers who demonstrated belly dancing and many people joined in and had a good time; children, adults and older people all tried it and had fun!The evening continued with the Polish dance troupe from Polonia in Cambridge who talked about the traditions of Poland, the costumes and dances they would demonstrate and then showed us some traditional steps. Everyone was encouraged to take part and most of us did! We learnt some easy moves and tried to keep up with the music!
The international buffet was provided by Chesterton Community College and included samosas, kebabs, vegetarian food and wonderful cakes. It was a great end to a happy evening which celebrated our various customs, languages, dance and music styles and tastes in food!
